How to Feel Confident in the Gym

how to feel confident in the gym

Only a few people feel immediately at ease in a new environment. I wasn’t one of them when I started going to the gym! As a few of you might start a fitness journey in January, I thought I would share a few tips on how to feel confident in the gym.

How to Feel Confident in the Gym

Find a Gym Partner
You may have a friend, co-worker or family member who goes to the gym regularly. Go with them a few times. They’ll probably be more than happy to help you and you won’t feel lost.

Hire a PT
Even if it’s just for a few sessions. A personal trainer can teach you how to use the equipments safely and will create a personalised workout plan for you to follow. You can then walk into the gym knowing exactly what to do and how to do it.

Get a Workout Plan
Alternatively you can find affordable workout plans with demo videos. Sessions are planned out for you and you can see how to execute each exercises. The best option is probably the Sweat app. They have different programs for all levels and great video content.

Go to Classes
Most classes are for all levels and are a great way to meet other newbies as well as get advice from the class instructor. There are so many types of classes out there that you’ll for sure find at least one that you like.

Avoid Rush Hour
If you’re feeling very self conscious, you don’t want to be at the gym at 6pm when everyone is there for their after-work session. Try to go in the morning or mid-afternoon when it’s quieter.

Set Realistic Goals
Write down monthly goals that have to be realistic and specific. Ticking them off at the end of the month will boost your confidence and motivate you to keep going. For instance, set a goal to go to the gym 3 times a week or to attend 2 classes a week. This is realistic enough for you to achieve it and more measurable that just setting a vague goal like “go to the gym regularly”.

Wear Confidence-Boosting Outfits
You don’t need a super expensive gym gear but you need to feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing. Myprotein Shape Seamless leggings and bra are great value for money.

Focus on Yourself
Easier said than done when you feel like everyone is staring at you. But they probably aren’t. Everyone goes to the gym to work on themselves and so do you. Just focus on giving it your all, for yourself. If it helps, put your earphones in and forget about the rest of the world.

Great advice! I lack confidence in the gym, it makes me feel really paranoid which it shouldnt. Perhaps if I knew what I was doing more I;d be a little more confident!

What great advice! As a personal trainer I was always shocked by all the people who went to the gym and then focused more on the people watching them than what they were doing! Once you get in the zone it’s soooo much better!

Going to the gym can be quite discouraging at the start but with great gym wear, confidence levels can be increased. As well, I’d prefer going with a gym partner.

Working out at home helped boost my confidence! I was a college athlete and loved working out in the gym but after having my baby girl I felt weak. Working out at home first helped give me that confidence boost I needed.

I definitely have realized over the past few years that public gyms are not the place for me! I didn’t realize it until I read your post, but I do love an empty gym. Recently, I started using my building gym and will look into signing up for more classes.

This is so timely for me as I just joined a new gym and it’s so packed right now. I am too intimated to use all of the equipment because it’s so crowded. But I’m hoping it won’t be so crowded soon.

I totally agree a gym partner increases your confidence in gym tremendously indeed. Fortunately, I have a gym buddy too

I needed to read this post! I’m normally really active, but I’ve taken a few months off from the gym, and getting back into it this week was so nerve-wracking. I felt so shy and unprepared, but I’m gonna utilize these tips to help me feel more confident. I started back with a PT though, so that’s definitely helping! Also just gotta say you look BOMB!!!

Tip 1 and 2 works great for me. A gym partner is absolutely a MUST to keep things going. At least for me.
